CHAPTER 17

SUNDAY JUNE 11, 2017

Bruce was ready for Chris’s help, so he took a few days off from work, loaded up the minivan with the equipment, and made the drive to the Hudson Valley. He arrived just after one in the afternoon.

“Just pull right into the back yard!” Bruce yelled.

Chris parked the car about twenty feet from an area that was dug out and marked off. Bruce reached into a cooler on the patio and pulled out a can of Bud Light.

“Welcome back my friend,” Bruce said as he handed him the beer and greeted him with a hug.

“Great to be back! I see what you did over there. Looks great.”

“Yeah, I dug it out about a foot deep. It’s twelve feet long, four feet wide.”

“It looks perfect. I think it’ll do the job.”

Marilyn came outside and greeted Chris with a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“Welcome back. I’m sorry I can’t hang today. We’re having our crew over tonight for a meeting and I’m getting everything set. What is your availability for the weekend of July fifteenth?” she asked.

“Should be good to go. I’ll clear that weekend. Is that when it’s going down?”

“That’s the date we’re shooting for. That’ll give everyone enough notice too. By the way, how are you doing? No problems, right?” she asked.

“Nope, never questioned by anyone. Seems like it finally died down a bit. My sister and her husband are obviously devastated but I think they’ve resigned themselves to the fact that she’s gone and she ain’t coming home.”

“Very good. We haven’t had any problems either. Feels good to know that we’re in the clear, doesn’t it?”

“Absolutely.”

“Well, I’ll let you boys get to it. Got a lot to do.”

Marilyn went back into the house and Chris opened the sliding door of his minivan. The back was loaded with cinder blocks and other materials, and a long metal pole, which Chris pulled out first.

“Fifteen-feet long, titanium,” Chris said as he placed it on the grass.

“Nice,” Bruce said.

“And five crossbars,” Chris said as he retrieved the other poles, much shorter in length. He placed them on the grass next to the long pole.

“How tall is the girl?” Chris asked.

“She’s close to six feet, probably a shade under.”

“Good. The pit is plenty long enough. Want to give me a hand with these?”

They placed flagstones on the outer edge of the pit. The cinder blocks were arranged around the perimeter of the stones, and mortar mix held them together.

“This keeps the heat in and the fire controlled,” Chris explained.

On three sides of the pit, the blocks were stacked three high. On one of the long sides, they left an open area in the middle about six feet long with only one row of blocks. Once the simple but laborious construction was complete, Chris pushed on the cinder block walls until he was satisfied that they would not fall over or cave in. On each end of the pit, Chris used a circular saw with a masonry blade to cut out a groove six inches down into the blocks.
